Safe Sleep 7 Guidelines

Discover the essential 7 guidelines for safe bedsharing and cosleeping with your infant. These practices are designed to ensure a secure and nurturing sleep environment for both you and your baby.

1️⃣ Breastfeeding Mom

Breastfeeding reduces SIDS risk and helps make bedsharing safer by promoting lighter sleep and better responsiveness.

2️⃣ No Smoking

Babies exposed to smoke before or after birth have a higher risk of SIDS. A completely smoke-free environment is essential.

3️⃣ Sober & Alert Parents

Parents should be fully awake and alert when bedsharing. Alcohol, drugs, and sedatives can increase SIDS risk.

4️⃣ Safe Sleep Surface

A firm, flat sleep surface without pillows or blankets prevents suffocation and keeps baby safe during sleep.

5️⃣ Baby Always on Their Back

Back sleeping is the safest position for babies and reduces the risk of suffocation and SIDS.

6️⃣ Light Sleep Clothing, No Heavy Covers

Loose blankets and overheating increase SIDS risk. Dress baby in light sleepwear or a sleep sack instead.

7️⃣ Safe Sleeping Position (Close but Not Too Close)

Baby should sleep next to mom, not between two adults. The “cuddle curl” position keeps baby safe.
